The spirit of language and literature came alive on 23rd April as DAV Centenary Public School, Ukkunagaram, joyfully celebrated English Language Day with passion and creativity. The event was organized by the English Department and held in the school auditorium, bringing together students and staff in a vibrant celebration of the English language and the legacy of William Shakespeare, whose birth anniversary is commemorated on this day.
Inaguaral address
The programme was inaugurated by our esteemed Principal, Smt. Sugandha Kumari, who lit the ceremonial lamp and addressed the gathering with motivating words. She emphasized the importance of mastering English not just as a subject, but as a powerful tool for global communication and lifelong learning.
The event began with a graceful welcome address, followed by a melodious group song celebrating the richness and global reach of English. This was complemented by an engaging presentation on the importance of Spoken English, which highlighted the practical benefits of fluency and confidence in the language
A scene from the play (click on the play button) A delightful and imaginative moment came with the role-play performance by two Class 6 students, who portrayed the beloved characters Doraemon and Cinderella. With charm and creativity, they brought together fantasy and fun, presenting a short interactive skit that not only entertained but subtly conveyed the value of imagination, friendship, and language in storytelling. Their performance captivated the younger audience and added a joyful, relatable touch to the programme.

One of the most awaited moments was the **dramatic enactment of the famous trial scene from William Shakespeare’s "The Merchant of Venice" **, presented by students of Classes VIII to X. Their compelling delivery, expressive acting, and articulate dialogue brought Shakespeare’s timeless drama to life and earned thunderous applause from the audience.
Several other performances followed—ranging from speeches and storytelling to creative skits—each showcasing the students' flair for English and their confidence on stage.
The entire celebration was masterfully coordinated by the English Department, under the dynamic leadership of Smt. Sreelatha Rajan, Head of the Department, and the able guidance of Smt. K. V. Lakshmi, CCA In-charge. The programme was further enriched by the support of the English teachers and enthusiastic collaboration from members of other departments.
English Language Day 2025 proved to be a meaningful celebration—one that inspired appreciation for the beauty of language, encouraged creative expression, and paid tribute to the enduring works of literary greats. It truly reflected the motto: “Language is the dress of thought.”
